Pakistan Test head coach Jason Gillespie discussed the reasons behind the exclusion of star pacers Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah from the playing XI in the second Test against Bangladesh. As Day 4 concluded, Bangladesh appeared set for a historic series sweep, needing just 143 runs to seal the deal, despite interruptions caused by rain.

Following a strong performance in the first innings, Pakistan's bowling unit struggled against Bangladesh's opening pair. The omission of Afridi and Shah was a significant topic of debate. Gillespie explained that the team selection was based on an assessment of the pitch and the game conditions. 'We analyzed the surface and selected the best combination accordingly. We bowled well in the first innings, maintaining excellent lines and lengths,' Gillespie stated during the post-day press conference.

While stressing the importance of not depending on individual players, Gillespie mentioned the aim to have Shaheen perform at his peak. 'Shaheen has had a busy personal life and we want him to be fit and firing for as much cricket as possible. He’s an all-format player, and we have a demanding schedule ahead,' Gillespie said. 'Our goal is to build a squad mentality, making well-informed decisions based on upcoming conditions,' he added. Bangladesh ended Day 4 with 42/0 on the scoreboard, with Zakir Hasan and Shadman Islam remaining unbeaten.
