Former England cricketer Mark Butcher has expressed serious concerns regarding the lack of experience within England's ODI squad as they prepare for the upcoming Champions Trophy. Speaking on the Wisden Cricket Weekly podcast, Butcher commented on England's recent 3-0 series defeat against India, which exposed significant weaknesses in their current ODI setup.

Fielding numerous inexperienced players, including Jacob Bethell with only 16 List A games under his belt, England struggled against India. Gus Atkinson, who made his international debut in 2023 after just two List A matches, faced a tough series, conceding 139 runs over two ODIs. Butcher emphasized that England's infrequent play in the 50-over format has left them naïve, unable to manage the nuanced tempo required in these longer matches.

Highlighting the stark contrast with India's young, but seasoned players, Butcher pointed out Shubman Gill's and Yashasvi Jaiswal's extensive experience despite their youth. England will begin their Champions Trophy campaign on February 22 against Australia in Lahore. Additional group stage games against Afghanistan and South Africa will test England's resolve as they aim to overcome recent setbacks.
