Rafael Benitez Takes Helm at Panathinaikos with Record Deal
Rafael Benitez, a former manager for Liverpool and Real Madrid, has been appointed as Panathinaikos' head coach, replacing Christos Kontis. Benitez has signed a two-year contract with an option for a third year, marking the highest salary for a coach in Greek football history.
Panathinaikos has secured the expertise of seasoned manager Rafael Benitez as their new head coach, replacing Christos Kontis. The Greek club announced this decision following a disappointing 3-1 Europa League loss to Feyenoord that led to Kontis' dismissal.
The 65-year-old Spaniard, renowned for his successes with clubs like Liverpool and Chelsea, has agreed to a lucrative two-year contract reportedly valued at around 4 million euros annually. This salary is said to set a record in the Greek football league.
Benitez's immediate challenge is to improve Panathinaikos' performance as they strive to climb from their current seventh place in the Greek Super League standings and address their shaky Europa League campaign start.
