Senegal has emerged as the first West African country for hosting a qualifying round of the world surfing championships on Thursday, March 28.

Thursday's world surfing championship had 65 surfers who participated in the event at Ngor (a commune d'arrondissement of the city of Dakar) from 15 countries including 26 women. Earlier, World Surf League selected countries like Morocco and South Africa for hosting the surfing championships.

"It's a matter of just looking at various aspects, you know, the security in the country, as well as the quality of the waves. Senegal just absolutely ticked off all the boxes when it comes to running an event," one of the senior officials of World Surf League Africa, Colin Fitch opined.

The races were cancelled on Wednesday, March 27 due to bad weather conditions and the surfers waited for another 24 hours to showcase their performances. "It was complicated (to convince the WSL to organize the event in Senegal)," the Vice-President of the Senegalese surfing federation, Oumar Seye told AFP.
