Padres, Paddack make Reyes' blast enough to beat D-backs

Franmil Reyes' two-run, sixth-inning homer tipped a pitching duel in Padres rookie Chris Paddack's favor as host San Diego beat Luke Weaver and the Arizona Diamondbacks 2-1 on Monday night. Reyes' 15th homer of the season, a 422-foot drive into the seats in right-center, followed a two-out single by Greg Garcia. The hits were only the second and third allowed by Weaver.

Paddack (4-2) allowed one run on five hits and a hit batter in six innings with seven strikeouts. He didn't walk a batter. He lowered his ERA after nine major league starts to 1.93, the lowest mark after nine starts in Padres' history. The Padres worked out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the seventh when the Diamondbacks loaded the bases on 12 straight balls thrown by relievers Trey Wingenter and Adam Warren. But Warren struck out Jarrod Dyson and retired Ketel Marte on a soft grounder to first.

Craig Stammen pitched a perfect eighth for the Padres. Kirby Yates stuck out two in a perfect ninth for his 18th save. Fifteen of the last 18 outs recorded by Yates have come on strikeouts. He has 20 strikeouts in his last eight innings. Arizona took a 1-0 lead in the third without hitting a ball hard. Nick Ahmed opened the inning with a single that ricocheted off Paddack's glove into right field. Ahmed advanced to third on a bloop single to right by Carson Kelly and scored when Dyson hit a grounder to second and beat the relay throw to avoid a doubleplay.

Weaver, meanwhile, retired the first seven Padres he faced before Austin Hedges singled in the third. He then retired the next 10 Padres he faced before Garcia's single. Reyes followed with his fifth homer in the last eight games. Weaver (3-3) allowed the two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and no walks in six innings.

The Padres had runners at second and third with none out in the bottom of the eighth on singles by Hedges and Manuel Margot. But Archie Bradley struck out Garcia and Reyes, and after an intentional walk to Manny Machado to load the bases, Andrew Chafin struck out Eric Hosmer to end the threat.
