Sloane Stephens was one of five top-16 seeds sent packing Tuesday at the Nature Valley International at Eastbourne, England. Latvia's Jelena Ostapenko overcame a poor start and 40 unforced errors while recording a 1-6, 6-0, 6-3 win over the seventh-seeded Stephens. Ostapenko posted 22 winners in the victory.

Curacao claim shock quarter-final berth at Gold Cup

Jurien Gaari scored a stoppage time equalizer as Curacao held Jamaica 1-1 at the Gold Cup in Los Angeles on Tuesday and booked a surprise quarter-final for the tiny Caribbean nation. Curacao had a nervous wait after the early match in Group C, but their progression was confirmed when El Salvador crashed out with a 4-0 loss to Honduras in the late contest.

MLB roundup: Yanks set homer record in win over Jays

DJ LeMahieu and Aaron Judge hit back-to-back homers in the first inning as the New York Yankees set the major league record by homering for the 28th straight game and held on for a 4-3 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. The Yankees broke the mark for the longest team homer streak previously held by the Texas Rangers, who achieved it from Aug. 11-Sept. 9, 2002, when Alex Rodriguez hit 16 of their 55 home runs.

Honduras dump El Salvador from Gold Cup with 4-0 result

Honduras upset El Salvador 4-0 at the Gold Cup in Los Angeles on Tuesday, a result that sent Curacao through to the quarter-finals at the expense of El Salvador. Three superb second-half goals in the space of 16 minutes earned Honduras their first points of the competition in the final match in Group C.

Martens sends Netherlands through to maiden quarter-finals

The Netherlands reached the women's World Cup quarter-finals for the first time when Lieke Martens' last-gasp penalty earned them a 2-1 victory against Japan on Tuesday. Martens put the Dutch in front after 17 minutes, only for Yui Hasegawa to level on the stroke of halftime, but the forward sent the European champions through with a spot kick in the last minute.

NHL notebook: Blues remove Berube's interim tag with deal

Craig Berube, who led the St. Louis Blues to the Stanley Cup as an interim head coach, signed a three-year contract Tuesday to stay with the team. Financial terms were not disclosed.

NBA notebook: Raptors president confident team can sign Leonard

Toronto Raptors president Masai Ujiri said Tuesday he has met with Kawhi Leonard, who is days away from becoming a free agent, and is confident the NBA champions can re-sign the superstar. Speaking at a season-ending news conference, Ujiri said he had "very good meetings with him the last few days" but declined to elaborate.

Wickenheiser heads six-member Hockey Hall of Fame class

Former Canadian women's star Hayley Wickenheiser headlines the six-player class chosen to the Hockey Hall of Fame on Tuesday. Former NHL players Guy Carbonneau, Sergei Zubov and Vaclav Nedomansky also were selected. Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford and Boston College coach Jerry York were chosen under the builder's category.

No grass courts? No problem, says Wimbledon king Djokovic

Lack of grass courts in Serbia will not be detrimental to Novak Djokovic's bid to defend his Wimbledon title, the world number one said in the early stages of his training for the July 1-14 tournament at the All England Club. "Find me a grass court in Belgrade and I will practice there," Djokovic joked when asked last week by reporters why he chose a hardcourt complex in the Serbian capital's center to start his preparations.

MLB notebook: Cardinals' Hicks to have Tommy John surgery

The St. Louis Cardinals confirmed Tuesday that hard-throwing reliever Jordan Hicks will undergo Tommy John surgery on his injured right elbow. Cardinals president John Mozeliak told reporters on Tuesday that the ligament-replacement procedure was necessary after an ulnar collateral ligament injury was revealed Monday.
