Ukrainian Pilots Begin F-16 Operations Amidst Russian Invasion
Ukrainian pilots have commenced using U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets in their operations, marking a significant development more than 29 months after Russia's invasion. The arrival of the jets is hailed as a milestone, though questions about their impact and training sufficiency remain. President Zelenskiy emphasizes ongoing efforts for more training and aircraft.
Ukrainian pilots have officially started flying U.S.-made F-16 fighter jets for operations within the country, President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed on Sunday. This announcement marks the long-awaited entry of these advanced aircraft, more than 29 months following Russia's invasion.
During a visit to an undisclosed air base, Zelenskiy expressed pride in the determination and skills of Ukrainian pilots mastering the F-16s. Flanked by two of the jets, he reiterated the need for additional jets and increased pilot training to fully leverage their potential in bolstering national defense.
Despite the milestone, the exact number of available jets remains unknown, and experts caution about their uncertain impact on Ukraine's air defenses and battlefield effectiveness. Russian forces have also targeted potential F-16 bases, vowing to neutralize the threat they pose. Nevertheless, Zelenskiy remains optimistic about future training programs and continued Western support to elevate Ukraine's aviation capabilities.
