TikTok's Return: U.S. Lifts App Store Ban after Trump Delays

TikTok reappeared on U.S. app stores after President Trump deferred a ban on the Chinese app, ensuring tech giants like Apple and Google wouldn't face penalties for hosting it. The app, crucial to many Americans, faced potential removal due to national security concerns related to its Chinese ownership.

TikTok made a comeback on the U.S. app stores of Apple and Google following a delay in the app's ban by President Donald Trump, who assured that the tech companies would not incur fines for distributing the app. The popular social media platform, used by nearly half of all Americans, had temporarily vanished last month due to looming legal actions.

Previously, a law required ByteDance, TikTok's Chinese owner, to divest its U.S. assets by January 19 or face a ban, prompting an executive order from Trump to delay enforcement by 75 days. This delay permitted TikTok to continue operations in the country for the time being.

Despite resuming service at Trump's assurances, the app remained absent in U.S. app stores until this Thursday. Analysts suggest Google and Apple awaited concrete assurances against legal repercussions before reinstating TikTok. A newly enacted law mandates the sale of Chinese-owned apps in the U.S. for national security reasons, echoing past concerns.
