New academic analysis warns that the growing comfort with AI masks a deeper problem. Many psychologists may believe they understand AI because they can use it effectively, even when they lack the technical, ethical, and epistemic knowledge needed to evaluate its outputs critically.

The study, titled The Competence Paradox: When Psychologists Overestimate Their Understanding of Artificial Intelligence, published in the journal AI & Society, argues that psychology is facing a silent risk not from AI replacing clinicians, but from professionals overestimating their competence with AI systems. This overconfidence, the author finds, threatens clinical judgment, ethical accountability, and the epistemic foundations of psychological practice.

Rather than presenting empirical testing of AI tools, the paper offers a theory-driven analysis that draws on cognitive psychology, professional ethics, and human–AI interaction research. It identifies a growing gap between perceived competence and actual understanding, a gap that could reshape the profession in ways that are difficult to reverse.

The competence paradox in psychological practice

The competence paradox emerges when psychologists equate smooth AI use with genuine understanding. As AI interfaces become more intuitive, clinicians can integrate them into workflows with minimal friction. The paper argues that this usability creates an illusion of mastery, where operational fluency replaces deeper comprehension of how systems work, where their limitations lie, and how their outputs are produced.

This illusion is reinforced by several cognitive mechanisms. One is automation bias, where users defer to machine-generated suggestions even when they conflict with professional judgment. Another is anthropomorphism, where AI systems are unconsciously treated as intelligent collaborators rather than probabilistic tools. The study also highlights identity-protective cognition, noting that psychologists may resist acknowledging gaps in AI knowledge because professional identity is closely tied to expertise and judgment.

The paper explains that this competence gap is especially dangerous in psychology because clinical work relies heavily on interpretation, nuance, and contextual reasoning. AI outputs often appear confident and coherent, even when they are incomplete, biased, or based on patterns that lack clinical validity. When clinicians lack the literacy to interrogate these outputs, they risk incorporating flawed reasoning into assessment and treatment decisions.

As expectations rise for productivity and efficiency, psychologists may feel pressure to use AI even when they are uncertain about its appropriateness. This tension contributes to technostress, role ambiguity, and burnout, particularly when clinicians feel accountable for outcomes influenced by systems they do not fully understand.

Legal exposure is another concern. The study highlights that responsibility for AI-assisted decisions remains firmly with the clinician, regardless of how much automation is involved. Overconfidence in AI competence may therefore increase liability risks, especially if adverse outcomes prompt scrutiny of decision-making processes.

Why AI literacy, not adoption, is the urgent priority

The most serious risk AI poses to psychology is epistemic rather than technological. The danger is not that machines will outperform clinicians, but that psychologists may lose the ability to critically evaluate knowledge claims when those claims are mediated by AI. This erosion of epistemic integrity threatens the profession’s credibility and ethical standing.

To address this, the author calls for a shift in how AI competence is defined. Basic operational skill is not enough. True competence requires understanding how models are trained, what data they rely on, where bias can enter, and how uncertainty should be interpreted. It also requires epistemic humility, the recognition that confident outputs do not equal reliable truth.

The study argues that AI literacy must be embedded in education, supervision, and continuing professional development. This includes training in AI limitations, ethical risk assessment, and reflective use rather than rote adoption. Professional guidelines should clarify acceptable uses of AI, documentation requirements, and boundaries of responsibility.

The paper also brings to light the need for collective governance. Individual psychologists cannot be expected to manage systemic risks alone. Professional associations, regulators, and training institutions must establish standards that prioritize accountability and client protection over convenience and novelty.
