The thriller 'Mercy' envisions a future where artificial intelligence leads the justice system, and guilt is presumed until innocence is proven. Set in 2029 Los Angeles, police detective Chris Raven must clear his name within 90 minutes or face execution by an AI judge he helped create.
LONDON - The gripping new thriller 'Mercy,' directed by Timur Bekmambetov, imagines a near future where artificial intelligence runs the justice system, and suspects must prove their innocence. The story, set in a violence-stricken Los Angeles in 2029, follows police detective Chris Raven, played by Chris Pratt, as he faces execution unless he can prove he did not murder his wife.
In a unique filming approach, stars Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson, who plays the AI judge Maddox, acted from separate stages and communicated through earpieces for lengthy scenes. Ferguson, exploring the nuances of AI emotional expression, remarked on the creative challenges.
The film, shot in the 'screenlife' style, highlights digital surveillance's role in constructing modern identities, prompting audiences to consider their own digital footprints. 'Mercy' opens globally on Thursday, encouraging viewers to reflect on their actions and privacy in a digital age.
