Narrow Majority May Slow India's Economic Reforms, Says Moody's
Moody's Ratings pointed out that the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) narrow majority in Lok Sabha could delay critical economic and fiscal reforms. Despite anticipated policy continuity favoring infrastructure and domestic manufacturing, projected fiscal consolidation progress remains challenged. India's pandemic-induced fiscal metrics linger below pre-pandemic levels and trail behind many Baa-rated peers.

Moody's Ratings has highlighted potential delays in India's economic reforms due to the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) slim majority in the Lok Sabha. The narrow margin may hinder more extensive fiscal reforms necessary for fiscal consolidation.
NDA's majority in the general elections provided a third term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Moody's expects policy continuity favoring infrastructure spending and domestic manufacturing, which would support robust economic growth.
However, India's fiscal progress remains weaker compared to Baa-rated peers, with ongoing challenges such as high youth unemployment and sluggish productivity growth in the agriculture sector.
