The Kochi Water Metro model, which has successfully revolutionized water transport in the state, could soon be seen in other major cities across India. Senior Shipping Ministry official revealed this potential expansion on Tuesday.

This announcement came after a review meeting held by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways (MoPSW). Chaired by MoPSW Secretary T K Ramachandran, the virtual meeting included senior officials from around 30 states and Union Territories. The objective was to ensure comprehensive development of maritime and waterways transport across the nation.

Significantly, the Kochi Water Metro completed one year of operation on April 25, 2024. Secretary Ramachandran emphasized the importance of initiatives such as the Sagarmala Programme and the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC) in enhancing India's maritime heritage and infrastructure. SMWTCs have already been established in 13 states, with plans to expand them to all 30 coastal and waterways states and UTs of India.
