India's economic momentum remains intact despite a somewhat erratic monsoon. The real GDP growth of 6.5-7 percent projected in the Economic Survey is deemed appropriate, according to a finance ministry report released on Thursday.
The Monthly Economic Review for July indicates that the Indian economy has maintained its momentum during the first four months of FY25, with Goods and Services Tax collections showing significant improvement, driven by an expanded tax base and increased economic activity.
Manufacturing and services sectors have exhibited strong performance, as reflected in their Purchasing Managers' indices, thanks to rising demand, new export orders, and growth in output prices. On the fiscal front, the Union Budget for FY25 has set a path for fiscal consolidation, with a projected decline in the fiscal deficit supported by strong revenue collection and fiscal discipline.
Retail inflation has decreased to 3.5 percent, the lowest since September 2019, due to moderated food inflation. The steady progress of the southwest monsoon has bolstered kharif sowing, with replenished reservoirs benefiting future crop production and potentially aiding further reduction in food inflation.
Overall, India's economic resilience is reflected in the healthy growth of tax collections, moderating inflation, improving exports, stabilizing stock markets, and rising foreign direct investments. The projected real GDP growth of 6.5-7 percent for FY25 remains appropriate according to the report.
