A widespread strike at Munich Airport, Germany's second-busiest airport, has significantly disrupted flights, with around 80% of services being cancelled. The two-day industrial action commenced Thursday, involving workers in ground handling services, spearheaded by the ver.di service workers' union.
The strike aims to intensify pressure on the ongoing wage and working condition negotiations with the federal and municipal authorities. As the strike continues, further cancellations of flights remain a possibility. Similar disruptions have been reported across other locations in Germany, including Hamburg Airport, though only flights to and from Munich were affected as per reports from German news agency dpa.
Amidst this chaos, Hamburg Airport has advised passengers to arrive early and limit their luggage to hand baggage where possible. This wave of public-sector walkouts underscores the heated climate surrounding labor negotiations currently unfolding across the nation.
