On Sunday, chaos ensued at Hamburg airport as almost 300 flights were abruptly canceled due to a walkout by ground handlers. The surprise action, spearheaded by the trade union Verdi, came ahead of a slate of wider strikes set to unfold across Germany on Monday.
Hamburg Airport reported that while ten flights had operated in the early hours, the abrupt strike resulted in the cancellation of 144 arrivals and 139 departures, impacting the travel plans of more than 40,000 people. Verdi, representing various labour groups including airport ground handling staff, stated that the strike action would continue, extending to passenger security checks.
The union is pushing for an 8% salary increase, asserting a minimum hike of 350 euros per month, along with demands for higher bonuses and more time off. Employers have labeled these demands as excessive. As negotiations stall, Verdi intensifies its actions after similar strikes last month, impacting major airports including Frankfurt and Munich.
