A devastating accident on the Kwa River in southwestern Congo claimed the lives of 25 people, among them several local soccer players. Returning from a match in Mushie city, the vessel capsized under cover of night, suspected to be due to poor visibility, according to provincial spokesman Alexis Mputu.
Survivors include at least 30 individuals, reported Renacle Kwatiba, the local administrator of Mushie territory. Such tragedies are unfortunately not uncommon in the central African country, where night-time travel and overcrowded boats frequently lead to disaster.
Congo's dependence on river transport is high, especially in regions with inadequate road infrastructure. Despite numerous accidents, enforcing maritime regulations remains a challenge, with fatal boat incidents having claimed hundreds of lives in recent years.
