The Indian stock market is witnessing a resurgence in investor interest with the National Stock Exchange (NSE) reporting 12.7 lakh new investors added in June 2025. This month marked the highest increase in new investors over the past five months, showing a 15% rise compared to May. This growth is seen as a positive sign of recovering investor confidence.
Data from the NSE indicates that by the end of June, the total unique investor count surpassed 11.6 crore. However, a closer look into the numbers reveals a slowing trend in the overall growth of new investors. The first six months of 2025 saw an average monthly addition of 12 lakh investors—a notable decline from the same period in 2024, which recorded an average of 19.2 lakh additions per month.
The decline is attributed to global uncertainties, including the extension of reciprocal tariffs, escalating tensions in West Asia, and other geopolitical factors impacting investor sentiment. Among Indian states, Uttar Pradesh led with 14% of new investor registrations in June, followed by Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, and Karnataka. Collectively, these states accounted for 46% of the month's new registrations. Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh saw a 13.1% increase in new investors since May, highlighting its significant contribution to the year's growth.
