A potential disaster was narrowly prevented in Kanpur on Friday when a sleeper bus from Delhi to Varanasi ignited on National Highway-19. The prompt actions of two constables led to the safe evacuation of all 38 passengers.
The bus fire erupted early at Ramadevi Chauraha, with smoke initially originating from luggage on the roof. Constables Sahil Khan and Pushpendra, nearby for traffic duty, swiftly intervened, rushing into the inferno without protective gear to rescue entrapped passengers, including women, children, and elders.
Despite the hazards, the constables persistently re-entered the smoke-filled vehicle to conduct seat-by-seat checks, ensuring all passengers were safe. The cause of the fire is uncertain, but a short circuit is suspected. An inquiry is underway, as the incident also caused a significant traffic jam.
