Karnataka's Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has made an urgent appeal to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, asking for prompt approval of Bengal gram procurement under the Price Support Scheme. This move follows lagging market prices that threaten the livelihoods of thousands of farmers in the state.
Siddaramaiah's letter emphasized the significance of Bengal gram as a principal pulse crop, highlighting its extensive cultivation over 9.24 lakh hectares and involvement of farmers across numerous districts. Despite the Centre's minimum support price (MSP) declaration, Karnataka market prices significantly trail, adding to farmers' financial strains.
Siddaramaiah urged the government to swiftly operationalize procurement centers via central agencies like NAFED. He underscored that procuring Bengal gram isn't just administrative, but a commitment to preserving farmers' dignity. The state is prepared to assist with registration, transport, and warehousing, ensuring seamless procurement.
