In a distressing revelation, Delhi Traffic Police reported that over 2,000 road accidents in 2025 resulted in 649 pedestrian fatalities and 1,738 injuries. The figures underscore the severe risks faced by pedestrians in the capital.
An alarming aspect is that in approximately half of these incidents, the vehicles responsible for pedestrian deaths remained unidentified. Private cars accounted for 92 pedestrian deaths out of 477 accidents, closely followed by two-wheelers involved in 472 incidents, resulting in 75 fatalities.
Demanding immediate attention are goods vehicles and tempos, implicated in 87 and 80 pedestrian accidents respectively, causing a significant number of deaths. The shocking statistics prompted a senior police officer to call for urgent pedestrian safety improvements in enforcement, infrastructure, and public awareness.
