The government of Kerala takes a historic step by agreeing to finance half the cost of the Angamaly-Erumely Sabari railway project, allocating Rs 1,900 crore through the Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board. This decision stems from a state cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, as revealed in a recent CMO release.
Originally proposed in the 1997-98 railway budget, the 110-km railway line is deemed crucial for providing safe travel for Sabarimala pilgrims and stimulating economic activities in the highland districts of Ernakulam, Idukki, and Pathanamthitta. Despite the Union government's insistence on state co-funding, Kerala's decisive action ensures the project is back on track.
The Sabari railway project's total cost is now estimated at Rs 3,800.9 crore, with the state assuming responsibility for half. It addresses previous delays due to land acquisition challenges and inadequate funding. Land acquisition processes are underway, marking Kerala's significant contribution to its own infrastructure development.
