A report by the government has revealed that 23 accidents have occurred within the last five years involving both scheduled and non-scheduled aviation operators, including helicopters. According to data announced in the Rajya Sabha, the rate of helicopter accidents last year reached a five-year high, standing at 0.53 per 10,000 flying hours.
Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol noted that manpower shortages in the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have not compromised safety functions. Of the 1,630 sanctioned positions, more than 780 remain vacant, though recruitment efforts are ramping up with offers extended to 106 candidates recently.
Mohol highlighted ongoing initiatives to recruit 167 candidates while more shortages are managed through short-term contracts. Meanwhile, the DGCA maintains a systematic safety oversight mechanism to ensure continued aviation safety despite staffing challenges.
