Chinese Airlines Hike Fuel Surcharges Amid Global Turmoil

Chinese airlines are set to increase fuel surcharges for domestic flights from May 16, deviating from their usual monthly adjustment schedule. The increase is attributed to the rising prices of jet fuel, influenced by the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict in Iran. Surcharges will see a rise of 30 to 50 yuan depending on the route length.

Starting May 16, Chinese airlines will implement a rise in fuel surcharges for domestic flights, marking a shift from their typical practice of adjusting these fees on the 5th of every month, as reported by China's financial news outlet Yicai.

For domestic flights covering 800 kilometers (500 miles) or less, the fuel surcharge will increase by 30 yuan, amounting to 90 yuan. For longer routes, the surcharge will go up by 50 yuan, reaching 170 yuan.

The move follows a six-fold hike in April by major Chinese airlines, as the ongoing U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran continues to escalate jet fuel prices. The exchange rate stands at one U.S. dollar to 6.7948 Chinese yuan renminbi.
