Germany and France have decided to abandon their highly anticipated project for a new-generation fighter jet, after months of industrial disagreements left the initiative stagnant, according to officials.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron discussed the future of the troubled defense project in Montenegro during the EU-Western Balkans summit. They concluded that continued efforts were not viable, given ongoing impediments between major industry partners Airbus and Dassault Aviation.

Despite the abandonment of the €100-billion project, European efforts to maintain some symbolic elements of the initiative continue. Systems outside the core fighter are expected to progress under the name Future Combat Air System (FCAS). However, industry tensions over development control and intellectual property remain a significant challenge.
