Despite concerns about economic and political instability, MBA programmes worldwide experienced a 7% increase in applications in 2025, according to a survey by the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). Major education hubs like Canada, the U.S., and the UK saw declines due to strict visa policies and labor market uncertainty, discouraging international applicants. However, programmes in Asia and Europe witnessed surges in applications, attracting candidates redirected from North American and UK regions.
India and East and Southeast Asia saw significant international application growth, up by 26% and 42% respectively, reflecting their business schools' effective marketing strategies and growing reputations. Joy Jones, the CEO of GMAC, stated that changing student and employer expectations, challenging geopolitics, and new skill demands driven by technologies like AI are reshaping the future of business education.
The survey highlighted several trends, including AI's widespread integration into classrooms and the importance of sustainability studies within MBA curricula. Globally, women's representation among GME applicants has remained stable, although their application rate has increased at a faster pace than their male counterparts. This data offers business schools valuable insights to adapt and position themselves for continued relevancy.
