The Lok Sabha on Monday cleared the path for electing two members from the House to the governing council of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) in Bengaluru. This move aims to heighten the governance and strategic functions of this premier institution.
Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan introduced the resolution, seeking the election of two representatives from the Lok Sabha. Despite ongoing protests concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across 12 states and Union territories, the resolution was successfully passed through a voice vote.
The IISc Council holds significant responsibility in steering the institute's administrative and strategic initiatives, including boosting infrastructure, enhancing capabilities, and fostering global collaborations. It comprises nominees from the Central government, Karnataka government, Tata Trusts, UGC, AICTE, Association of Indian Universities, and members from both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, among others.
