UGC's Bold Step: Mental Health Boost for Students in Higher Education
The UGC panel suggests a mental health overhaul in educational institutions, advocating for specific counsellor-to-student ratios, periodic awareness, and dedicated centers. A draft guideline outlines necessary infrastructure and monitoring via 'MANASSETU' to ensure well-being and reduction in student distress, enhancing mental health support systems across higher education in India.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) panel has proposed significant changes to mental health support systems within higher education institutions. Recommendations include the appointment of one counselor for every 500 students in large institutions and one for every 100 in smaller ones, along with regular stress and anxiety awareness programs.
According to the proposed guidelines, titled 'UGC Guidelines on Uniform Policy on Mental Health & Well-Being for Higher Educational Institutions,' universities and colleges would be required to establish dedicated Mental Health & Well-being Centres. These centres would offer privacy and a secure environment for consultations, along with proper documentation storage protocols.
The UGC will monitor compliance with these guidelines via a specialized portal named 'MANASSETU,' collecting feedback and annual reports. Further collaboration with organizations such as the National Research Foundation, WHO, and others will aid in the development of effective mental health strategies.
