The Border Security Force (BSF) has launched an initiative to provide IELTS coaching to youngsters in Punjab, as part of its efforts to steer them away from drug abuse, a senior officer confirmed on Friday.
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is highly regarded worldwide for those seeking to study, migrate, or work abroad, attracting around 30 lakh candidates annually. It is recognized by employers, universities, and immigration bodies globally.
Inspector General Atul Fulzele of BSF's Punjab frontier highlighted that the force utilized Union government funds designated for civic action to hire two proficient English-speaking teachers. These educators have been offering IELTS coaching to youths in Amarkot, Tarn Taran district.
"Local villagers and children approached our officers from the 103rd battalion, expressing their inability to afford IELTS training. They requested our support," Fulzele shared with reporters.
To date, around 40-50 youngsters, predominantly girls, have received training, with three girls having successfully cleared the exam.
Fulzele emphasized that the primary goal of this initiative is to engage the youth in productive activities, thus distancing them from drugs. Addressing concerns about whether this would encourage youngsters to move abroad, Fulzele pointed out the children's keen interest and added, "We are equipping them with a skill that allows them to excel globally."
It is noteworthy that the BSF is entrusted with guarding a 553-kilometer stretch of the India-Pakistan border in Punjab.
