On Saturday, Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, communicated with the bereaved parents of Anna Sebastian Perayil, a young professional who allegedly succumbed to extreme work pressure at Ernst & Young. Gandhi pledged to fight for improved working conditions for Indian professionals.
The video call, facilitated by Praveen Chakravarty, Chairman of the All India Professionals' Congress (AIPC), elicited a heart-wrenching revelation from Anna's mother about her daughter's grueling work hours. Gandhi affirmed his commitment to raising the issue in Parliament.
Further, Gandhi directed AIPC to initiate an awareness movement in Anna's memory, including setting up a helpline for work-stress-related complaints. AIPC plans to draft guidelines for better workplace conditions based on gathered data. Former AIPC Chairman Shashi Tharoor also supports legislative action to enforce humane work schedules.
