The West Bengal government has made the decision to preserve the last remaining double-decker bus in Kolkata, opting to restore and display it in a museum, reportedly reversing an earlier decision to scrap the historic vehicle.
A senior transport official revealed to PTI that the decision to decommission the bus was due to its high maintenance requirements. However, the vehicle is now being renovated for exhibition, illustrating the evolution of city transport alongside other historical models.
The bus's preservation gained public support after a photograph of it in a scrap yard incited uproar. A local bus enthusiast group, Kolkata Bus-o-Pedia, played a key role in rallying to save the bus, engaging with Transport Minister Snehasis Chakraborty to ensure its survival and historical legacy.
