The Khasi Students Union is advocating for a ban on firecrackers in Shillong during the upcoming Diwali celebrations. This comes amidst concerns over escalating air pollution levels in the city, which have reportedly impacted public health, particularly for those with respiratory ailments.
Addressing concerns, KSU president Lambokstar Marngar highlighted that the excessive use of firecrackers has exacerbated air pollution levels, urging the state government to enforce a temporary ban and promote eco-friendly alternatives like lamps and cultural activities.
In a significant revelation, Byrnihat, a town on the interstate border in Meghalaya, has been identified as the most polluted city in the country, surpassing national air quality standards. The KSU's initiative is seen as a step towards ensuring a healthier and more sustainable Diwali.
