A journalist in Assam has been detained, drawing widespread condemnation. Dilwar Hussain Mozumder of 'The Cross Current' was arrested following his questioning of a cooperative bank's managing director concerning alleged fiscal misconduct. His arrest spurred criticism from media bodies and political opposition, who are calling for his immediate release.
Mozumder, a chief reporter and assistant general secretary of the Gauhati Press Club, was detained for over nine hours and arrested under various charges, including those relating to criminal intimidation. A complaint alleges that Mozumder's remarks were intentionally offensive, particularly to a person of the Scheduled Tribe community. The offence is deemed non-bailable under applicable sections of the law.
The police deemed the arrest necessary to prevent potential influence or tampering with evidence. Meanwhile, Mozumder reportedly alleged tampering of video evidence during the protest. Media organizations are planning protests, while political opposition, including the Congress and Assam Jatiya Parishad, are demanding Mozumder's release.
