In an unprecedented move, the Varanasi Municipal Corporation has decided to shut down all fish and meat shops within the city's limits during the Navratri festival. This decision was announced following a unanimous vote held during an executive meeting on Thursday.
Mayor Ashok Tiwari cited the religious significance of Kashi and the sentiments of the devotees as key reasons for the closure. The measure aims to honor the sacred period by aligning with cultural and religious practices observed by many residents.
The eight-day festival, beginning on March 30 and ending on April 6, is a significant event in the Indian religious calendar, attracting devotees and tourists alike. Strict penalties have been warned against those violating the order, according to Tiwari's statements on Friday.
