The iconic sword of Raghuji Bhonsle I, a celebrated Maratha general, has finally returned to Indian soil, marking a significant cultural reclamation for Maharashtra. Acquired in a London auction, the sword arrived in Mumbai on Monday morning and was promptly moved to the P L Deshpande Academy for safekeeping.
The flight carrying the historic weapon landed at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport at 10 am. Heavy rains and traffic congestion forced the cancellation of a bike rally planned to escort the relic, but a scheduled evening program will proceed with the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Deputy Chief Ministers.
Acquired for Rs 47.15 lakh, the sword is a treasured example of Maratha military craftsmanship, with a European-made blade and intricate gold decorations. Its repatriation is hailed as a 'historic victory' by state Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar, who was instrumental in securing the sword's return, assisted by the Archaeology Department's Deputy Director. The weapon is a poignant reminder of the Maratha's martial prowess and cultural heritage.
