Renowned Hindustani classical music vocalist, Pandit Chhannulal Mishra, passed away early Thursday at the age of 89. The Padma Vibhushan awardee was living in Mirzapur and had been battling a prolonged illness. His youngest daughter, Namrata, confirmed his passing around 4 am, following hospital treatment.
Tributes poured in from prominent figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Expressing his condolences, Modi praised Mishra's invaluable contribution to Indian arts and recalled their association from Varanasi's Lok Sabha seat elections in 2014. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also mourned the death, calling it an irreparable loss to the classical music genre.
Mishra's illustrious career showcased his mastery over styles such as Khayal, Thumri, and Bhajan. Trained by his father and notable gurus, he became a doyen of the Banaras gharana. Having received Padma Vibhushan in 2020, Mishra's rich legacy will continue to inspire future generations.
