On World Wetlands Day 2026, Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav emphasized the vital role of wetlands in nurturing ecosystems and communities. Highlighting India's culturally driven approach to conservation, Yadav noted the country's substantial extension of Ramsar sites from 26 to 98 since 2014 under Prime Minister Modi's leadership.
The ministry organized an event at Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary focusing on 'Wetlands and Traditional Knowledge: Celebrating Cultural Heritage.' The gathering aimed to underline the importance of traditional knowledge and community participation in wetlands conservation, asserting these natural resources as cultural and social linchpins.
Union Minister of State for Environment Kirti Vardhan Singh stressed wetlands' significance beyond mere water sources, linking them to daily social interactions and cultural practices. He praised the youth's rising participation in conservation efforts, calling for a movement that extends beyond rules and involves public engagement.
