The Maharashtra archaeology department has officially requested that the local civic body transfer the historic Town Hall building for a new museum. This initiative aims to provide a space for nearly 1,000 artefacts originally housed in Soneri Mahal, now closed after safety audits.
Soneri Mahal, constructed in the 17th century, once displayed medieval artefacts such as guns, cannons, and coins. After its closure a couple of years ago due to structural concerns, students lost access to these invaluable historical resources.
The archaeology department emphasizes the urgency of re-establishing a museum to prevent academic losses. It urges the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar Municipal Corporation to act swiftly in handing over the Town Hall, a significant historical building completed in the early 17th century by Nizamshahi general Malik Amber.
