Successful bidders of iron ore mining blocks in Goa have been asked to give preference in employment to local residents at all levels of operations, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant told the Legislative Assembly on Wednesday.

Sawant, who also holds the mining portfolio, said in tender documents a provision was made that the ''successful bidder shall give preference in employment to local residents at all levels of operations subject to such residents being available, qualified and suitable for such employment''.

The CM said the state government has already auctioned four iron ore mining blocks, which were won by Vedanta Ltd, Salgaoncar Shipping Company Pvt Ltd, Rajaram Bandekar Mines Pvt Ltd and Fomento Resources Pvt Ltd.

The auction was conducted by the state government's Directorate of Mines and Geology.

The chief minister said mining operations by successful bidders will start after due statutory approval is granted by authorities concerned.
