Cairn Oil & Gas, a subsidiary of the Vedanta Group, announced on Monday its ambitious goal to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2030. This target will be achieved through a blend of renewable energy investments and large-scale tree planting initiatives.
According to the company, diverse measures are being undertaken to minimize its environmental footprint. These include sourcing up to 70 MW of renewable energy, with an initial 25 MW set to begin this fiscal year. Solar rooftops are also planned for operational sites in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
Notably, Cairn has achieved a 60% reduction in gas flaring intensity over the past four years. The company is already net water positive, recycling over 96% of produced water. A feasibility study on a 'waste to power' project for lean gas and other industrial waste is underway, further demonstrating their commitment to sustainability. By 2030, Cairn plans to plant 2 million trees, contributing significantly to its greenbelt efforts in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
