Congress leader K Muraleedharan on Saturday sharply criticized the BJP-led Central government for its decision to observe June 25—the day Emergency was declared in 1975—as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas'. Muraleedharan emphasized that although Indira Gandhi imposed the Emergency in 1975, she withdrew it once the situation improved and accepted her electoral defeat when she announced an election.
Muraleedharan accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of acting like an 'Emergency Prime Minister', denying opposition their rights and ignoring democratic norms. He alleged that Modi's leadership style resembled dictatorship and underscored the different political context compared to 1975.
Meanwhile, BJP leader Sudhanshu Trivedi struck back, questioning the stance of the INDI bloc leaders and defending the government's move. Trivedi highlighted Indira Gandhi's conviction for electoral malpractices by the Allahabad High Court and suggested that her imposition of the Emergency had political motives. Trivedi criticized Gandhi for undermining judicial scrutiny and pointed out that no court could comment on or question the Prime Minister during the Emergency.
