Wall Street surged higher on Monday, buoyed by increased expectations of a second Donald Trump presidency following a failed assassination attempt. This speculation raised hopes for a looser regulatory environment and the Federal Reserve potentially cutting key interest rates as early as September.
Although all three major U.S. stock indexes ended the day below their session highs, the Dow Jones Industrial Average achieved an all-time closing high. Small-cap and transportation stocks significantly outperformed the broader market, highlighting investor optimism.
The assassination attempt in Pennsylvania over the weekend, which targeted Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, appeared to bolster his election chances. PredictIt online betting showed a rise in bets for a Trump win to 67 cents, up from 60 cents on Friday, while a Joe Biden victory was pegged at 26 cents.
