Ukraine Showcases Olympic Spirit with Special Postage Stamp Amid War

Ukraine has issued a special postage stamp to support its Olympic athletes as the nation sends its smallest team ever to the Paris Games amidst ongoing conflict with Russia. The stamp features sports where Ukraine has previously won medals. War conditions, including frequent blackouts and destroyed sports facilities, have heavily impacted training efforts.

Ukraine has introduced a new postage stamp in a bid to support its Olympic athletes as the country dispatches its smallest team ever to the Paris Games while grappling with the war against Russia, which has now reached 29 months. Only 140 Ukrainian athletes are set to participate, the lowest count in Ukraine's Olympic history.

The invasion by Russia has claimed the lives of athletes and coaches, forced many to flee, and damaged numerous sports facilities. Frequent air raid alerts and extended power blackouts due to Russian bombardments have further disrupted training. 'We have spent countless hours without electricity, without water, in darkness, in cold, in heat. I think we have gone through everything,' said Vlada Kharkova, a fencer, during the launch of Ukraine's Olympic postage stamp in Kyiv.

'These conditions made us stronger, and we are ready to show the whole world that despite everything, we are Ukrainians, and we are unbreakable as the Ukrainian nation,' Kharkova added. The new set of six postage stamps highlights sports in which Ukraine has previously excelled, including fencing, judo, tennis, canoeing, weightlifting, and shooting. According to Ukraine’s Sports Ministry, 479 athletes and coaches have been killed since the start of Russia's invasion in February 2022, with more than 500 sports facilities destroyed. While the International Olympic Committee initially recommended banning athletes from Russia and Belarus, it has since permitted 25 athletes from these nations to compete as neutrals at the Paris Olympics.
