Kerala Landslides Claim 84 Lives, Massive Rescue Operation Underway

In the aftermath of devastating landslides in Kerala's Wayanad, the death toll has climbed to 84 with 116 injured. A comprehensive rescue operation involving state ministers, the Navy, Army, and Air Force is ongoing as the region braces for more rainfall.

The death toll from the landslides in Kerala's Wayanad has reached 84, with 116 injuries reported, according to the Kerala Revenue Minister's office. Approximately 116 individuals are receiving treatment at various hospitals in the district.

Kerala Chief Secretary V Venu announced that over 80 bodies were recovered on Tuesday as rescue operations continue. Union Minister of State George Kurian is en route to Wayanad to oversee relief efforts. Following directives from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Kurian will coordinate with National Disaster Relief Force personnel, paramilitary forces, and state officials.

Kerala Forest Minister Saseendran assessed the damage and is coordinating response measures. State Minister Ramachandran Kadannappalli is expected to join the efforts. A delegation from the Revenue, Public Works, and Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes Departments is also traveling to the site.

An Indian Navy team from Ezhimala Naval Base in Kannur has been dispatched to assist in Chooralmala, severely hit by landslides after torrential rains. Chief Minister Pinrayi Vijayan requested the Navy's assistance. The Army and Air Force have also been mobilized, although operations are hindered by the collapse of a major bridge in Chooralmala.

About 200 Indian Army personnel from DSC Centre Kannur and 122 TA Battalion from Kozhikode are aiding in the relief. A team of 30 specialist swimmers from the Indian Navy and two helicopters from Air Force Station Sulur are contributing to rescue efforts. The India Meteorological Department has issued red alerts for eight districts, warning of heavy rainfall.
