Authorities and locals are still struggling to determine the exact number of people missing, with the toll rising to 173 and approximately 191 people still unaccounted for, though the actual numbers may be higher.
Rescue teams are battling challenging conditions, including muddy soil and persistent rain, as they sift through the wreckage of destroyed homes and buildings. State Revenue Minister K Rajan, who is coordinating the efforts, stated that they initially used voter lists to identify the missing but are now relying on ration cards and information from local workers to get a more accurate count.
The disaster has impacted a vast area, with bodies being recovered from the Chaliyar River in Malappuram district, highlighting the incident's extensive reach. Villagers noted the drastic changes to the landscape, and rescue workers, including the Army, Navy, NDRF, police, and local volunteers, continue their tireless efforts to find the missing.
