In light of the continuing unrest in Bangladesh, the North East Students' Organisation (NESO) has appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to ensure no illegal immigrants enter the North Eastern states. The group also emphasized that no Bangladeshi should be granted asylum or rehabilitation in the region.
In a letter addressed to the Union Home Minister, NESO stressed the importance of strict border management between North East India and Bangladesh to prevent illegal immigration. Representing eight student bodies across seven states, NESO cited past instances of mass illegal migration from Bangladesh during civil conflicts and wars, which have led to significant demographic changes and socio-economic tensions.
The letter highlighted historical context, such as the Partition of 1947 and the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, noting that such events had led to large-scale illegal migration into North East India. This influx has reportedly caused immense strain on the indigenous communities, leading to cultural assimilation pressures, economic competition, and land disputes. NESO called for immediate government action to protect the indigenous populations and to ensure robust border security measures.
