Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Legislative Assembly and BJP leader, Suvendu Adhikari, demanded a CBI inquiry on Friday into the death of a 31-year-old postgraduate trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata. He also urged student communities to protest against the state government's 'lackadaisical' response.

Taking to social media platform X, Adhikari said, 'The body of the second-year postgraduate student at RG Kar Medical College, found dead inside the Seminar Hall on the 3rd floor of the emergency building under mysterious circumstances, reportedly had injury marks.' He mentioned unconfirmed reports suggesting signs of strangulation and traces of seminal fluid, indicating a possible case of murder and rape.

Adhikari criticized the state government for allegedly forming an 11-member inquiry committee that includes interns, accusing it of either covering up negligence or not taking the matter seriously. He called for vigorous protests from the student community, especially medical students, and promised his support for ensuring justice for the deceased student.

Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Sougata Roy, responding to the incident, stated that he had reviewed relevant documents and expressed hope that the accused would be arrested and punished soon. On Friday evening, students organized a candlelight march in the city to protest the postgraduate trainee doctor's death.

The incident has sparked a political storm in West Bengal, with BJP MLA Agnimitra Paul also demanding a CBI investigation and a re-postmortem by a Central Government hospital. 'The condition in which her body was found--completely naked with bruises--suggests she was raped and then murdered. We demand a CBI investigation,' Paul asserted. She emphasized that a re-postmortem by a central government hospital is necessary to ensure justice.
