Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday introduced 109 high-yielding, climate-resilient, and biofortified seed varieties aimed at enhancing agricultural productivity and increasing farmers' incomes.

Developed by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), these new seed varieties span 61 crops, including 34 field crops and 27 horticultural crops. The launch took place at three experimental agriculture plots at Delhi's Pusa Campus, where Modi interacted with farmers and scientists.

The unveiled field crop varieties encompass cereals, millets, forage crops, oilseeds, pulses, sugarcane, cotton, and fibre crops. In the horticulture segment, new varieties of fruits, vegetables, plantation crops, tubers, spices, flowers, and medicinal plants were released. Modi, who has been advocating sustainable farming practices and climate-resilient methods since 2014, linked the promotion of biofortified crops to anti-malnutrition programs like the Mid-Day Meal scheme and Anganwadi services.
