Investors Brace for Key U.S. Consumer Price Data Amid Stock Volatility
U.S. stock index futures remained subdued as investors await crucial U.S. consumer price data that could influence Federal Reserve's interest rate decisions. Markets faced volatility last week, with focus on inflation data and retail sales figures due this week. Analysts highlight potential opportunities amidst economic uncertainties.
U.S. stock index futures traded in a subdued manner on Monday as investors braced for a week filled with critical economic data. Attention is particularly focused on U.S. consumer price data, which could offer significant insights into the Federal Reserve's upcoming interest rate decisions for September.
Market volatility marked last week, starting with a sharp downturn triggered by a disappointing July jobs report that fanned recession fears. Investors are expected to remain cautious until Wednesday's Consumer Price Index (CPI) reading, anticipated to show a modest 0.2% monthly increase, holding steady at 3.2% year-over-year.
According to the CME's FedWatch Tool, money markets are split between expectations of a 50- and 25-basis-point cut in interest rates, aiming for a total 100 bps reduction by the end of 2024. Retail sales data due Thursday is projected to show slight growth, but potential weakness could reignite fears of a consumer slowdown and recession.
