Thousands of women from different backgrounds are preparing to gather in various parts of West Bengal at the stroke of midnight on Wednesday, in protest against the brutal rape and murder of an on-duty doctor inside a Kolkata hospital last week.
The movement, dubbed 'Women, Reclaim the Night,' has gained momentum on social media, with commoners, college students, home-makers, and office workers set to congregate in key areas across Kolkata and other towns.
Timed to coincide with the nation celebrating Independence Day, the protest has banned political party flags but will allow LGBTQ+ groups to participate. Support has surged from all sections of society, including Kolkata Metro Railway, which will run additional trains to accommodate the anticipated movement of protestors.
