Nationwide Protests Erupt After Doctor's Tragic Death in Kolkata

The murder and alleged sexual assault of a female doctor on August 9 at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata have ignited widespread protests among students and junior doctors.

Protests have erupted not just in West Bengal but in several other states, including Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, and Mumbai. The Calcutta High Court has ordered the transfer of the case to the Central Bureau of Investigation, moving it from the state police.

The tragic incident, which occurred during the doctor's duty hours, led to nationwide strikes and protests. On August 14, the protest site and hospital campus were vandalized by a mob, forcing security personnel to intervene. To maintain law and order, Kolkata police have invoked Section 163 around RG Kar Medical College for seven days, effective from August 18.
